Lady Carton de Wiart

Lady Carton de Wiart, who died 13 January, 2006, aged 101, was the second wife, and widow, of Lieutenant-General Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart, VC, KBE, CB, CMG, DSO (b. Brussels 1880; d. 5 June, 1963).
As Mrs Joan Sutherland she married Sir Adrian as his second wife in 1951. His first wife, who died in 1949, was Countess Frederica, daughter of Prince Fugger Babenhausen by his wife Nora, Princess Hohenlohe.
Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart VC, was a British officer of Belgian and Irish descent. He is one of the most remarkable figures in British military history, renowned for bravery, his striking character and the sheer adventure of his long life. He was the model for "Brigadier Ben Ritchie Hook" in the Sword of Honour trilogy of Evelyn Waugh.
The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography described him so, "With his black eyepatch and empty sleeve, Carton De Wiart looked like an elegant pirate, and became a figure of legend."
The funeral Service takes place at Aherla Church, Co Cork, Ireland, on Thursday 19 January, 2006.
