Maxime de la Falaise 1922-2009

Maxime de la Falaise (nee Birley), who died 30 April, 2009, aged 86, became famous in the 1950s for her contributions to the worlds of fashion and food; in her colourful private life, she was also something of a social maverick.

She was born Maxine Birley, 25 June, 1922, dau of society portrait painter Sir Oswald Hornby Joseph Birley, MC, RA (1880 –1952), by his wife the former Rhoda Vava Mary Lecky Pike (LG of Ireland), and was sister of Mark Oswald Hornby Lecky Birley (1930-2007). She married (i) Comte Alain de la Falaise, by whom she had a dau, the model Loulou de la Falaise, and a son Alexis de la Falais; she married (ii) John McKendry, curator of prints and photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
